Coating Overview

A fastener coating decision is a purchasing decision, not just a color decision. The right surface treatment balances corrosion resistance, assembly fit, appearance, cost, lead time, grade risk and export packing.

Research Notes: Coating Guides Need More Than Color Names

Strong coating articles usually list zinc plating, hot-dip galvanizing, black oxide, phosphate and zinc flake. To make the page more useful for procurement, this guide adds buyer decisions: grade risk, thread fit, coating thickness expectations, packaging protection and inspection documents.

  • Compares surface treatments by corrosion, appearance, thread impact, cost and grade caution.
  • Highlights high-strength fastener coating risk instead of treating all finishes as interchangeable.
  • Turns coating selection into a factory RFQ process with photos, certificates and packing requirements.
Zinc platingTypical decorative and economical coating for many fasteners.
HDGThicker outdoor protection where thread fit is planned.
Black oxideDark appearance, usually indoor or oiled applications.
Zinc flakeHigher corrosion demand and non-electrolytic process option.

Zinc Plating And Hot-Dip Galvanizing

Zinc plating is widely used because it is economical and attractive. Common colors include blue-white zinc, yellow zinc, black zinc and color zinc. Hot-dip galvanizing is thicker and more suitable for many outdoor projects, but thread allowance and nut matching should be considered.

Galvanized grade 8.8 bolts

Zinc and galvanized finishes should be checked for appearance and thread fit.

Bulk coated fasteners for export

Bulk coating requires batch separation and packing protection.

Custom fasteners with surface treatment

Custom parts may need sample coating approval before mass production.

Black Oxide And Phosphate

Black oxide is often selected when buyers want a dark appearance and thin finish. Phosphate can support oil retention and assembly behavior. These finishes should not be treated as universal outdoor anti-rust solutions unless the buyer accepts the corrosion level and maintenance method.

Zinc Flake For Higher Requirements

Zinc flake coatings are often considered when corrosion resistance and high-strength steel risk control both matter. Buyers should specify coating system, target salt spray, color, friction requirement and whether the parts must avoid electroplating.

FAQ

Which coating is best for outdoor fasteners?

Hot-dip galvanizing or suitable zinc flake coating is often considered for outdoor corrosion resistance, but final choice depends on environment, thread fit, appearance and engineering requirements.

Is black oxide corrosion resistant?

Black oxide mainly provides a dark appearance and limited corrosion resistance, often with oil. It is not usually the first choice for long outdoor exposure.

What zinc thickness can be supplied?

Zinc plating thickness commonly depends on order specification and local process capability. Buyers should state required thickness or salt spray expectation instead of only saying zinc plated.

Can coated fasteners be packed with private labels?

Yes. Rengong can support neutral cartons, private-label cartons, pallet packing, barcodes, buyer marks and export-ready packing after coating inspection.
